How to read the Celtic Cross

The six cards of the cross tell you what is happening now. In the center is the situation (1) and, lying across it, what crosses it (2). Below sits the root of the matter (3) and to the left what just happened (4). Above, what you are after (5), and to the right, what is coming (6).

The column on the right is read from the bottom up: you (7), your surroundings (8), your hopes and fears (9) and the outcome (10). If you don't like the outcome, go back to cards 2 and 7. That's usually where the part you can change is.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Celtic Cross?

It's the best known tarot spread for reading a situation in depth. It has ten cards. Six form a cross with what is happening now, and four, in a column, are about you, the people around you, what you hope for and how it might turn out.

When should I use it?

When the question matters and has many sides, like a job change or a complicated relationship that keeps you up at night. For quick questions, the yes or no tarot or the daily card work better.

In what order are the cards read?

From 1 to 10. First the situation and what crosses it, then the root, the past, what you are after and what is coming. Then the column on the right, from the bottom up: you, your surroundings, your hopes and fears, and the outcome.

Can I do the reading again?

If you ask the same question on the same day, the same cards will come up. With ten of them, you have plenty to think about anyway.

Is it free?

Yes, always, with no sign-up. Your question is only saved in your browser.
