The Fool

beginnings, freedom, trust

The Fool is where everything starts: a young traveler leaving home with a small bundle on one shoulder and a light heart. This card turns up when it's time to start fresh, curious and without a map. Lightness has its risks, though. Watch where you put your feet.

The image and its symbolism

In the Rider-Waite deck, The Fool is numbered 0. A young figure walks along the edge of a cliff with eyes on the sky, as if the drop just ahead weren't there. They wear a flowered tunic, yellow boots and a cap with a red feather. Over one shoulder rests a stick with a small bundle tied to it, and the other hand holds a white rose.

Behind them a white sun shines in a yellow sky, with snowy mountains in the distance. A small white dog jumps at their feet, and it's hard to say whether it's warning them or cheering them on. The cliff is the risk of the unknown. The white rose speaks of innocence and good intentions, and the bundle of how little you really need to set out. The dog is instinct, the part of you that tags along and protects. And the zero is exactly that: the starting point, before any story has begun.

What The Fool means

Upright, The Fool appears when you're about to start something without knowing how it ends. There's some naivety in that, sure, but mostly there's courage, because this card moves without waiting for guarantees. Think of moving to a new city, signing up for the thing you never dared to try, or saying yes to a last-minute plan.

It's also about putting down some weight. We often stay stuck because we want everything under control, and the card asks whether that control is protecting you or just holding you back. Nobody is telling you to leap blindly. You only need to accept that every beginning comes with a little uncertainty.

The Fool in love

A new relationship that feels different from anything you've known, or a wish to love more freely. If you're single, let yourself be surprised and keep your expectations loose.

If you're in a relationship

In a relationship, The Fool brings a wish to get back that early-days spark. Try new plans together and break the routine, because surprise counts too. One of you may need more freedom within the relationship. If so, talk about it early and without drama.

If you're single

Someone very different from your usual type could show up, and that's exactly why they deserve a chance. Keep things light when you meet people, and don't write the ending before it's time.

If you're thinking about an ex

This card looks ahead much more than back. Starting over rarely means repeating the same story. If you two did reconnect, it would have to be something new, not the old thing under a different name.

At work

A change of direction, a project of your own, or a job unlike anything you've done before. Go for it, but bring at least a bare-bones plan.

Expect a change of course, like a job in a different field or a side project that opens a door you didn't see coming. A good card if you're thinking about starting your own thing or reinventing yourself. Be as excited as you like, but do some basic prep and keep a plan B handy.

Money

Watch out for impulse spending and investments that sound too good to be true. There may be money for an adventure, a trip or a big life change, as long as you don't gamble what you need to live on. Run the numbers before you jump.

Health and well-being

A fresh urge to get moving. Try new habits, just don't throw yourself in recklessly, and don't skip your rest.

As feelings, as a person and as the future

As feelings

They're attracted to you and want to have a good time with you. They're excited about what you two could share, though commitment and labels aren't even on their radar yet. What they feel is sincere, just very much in the moment.

As a person

Someone spontaneous and fun, the kind who can't stand schedules or fixed plans. Their enthusiasm is contagious wherever they go.

As the future

A beginning is on its way. It could be a change of scenery or a decision that pulls you out of your routine. How you prepare for that leap has a lot to do with how it turns out.

The Fool reversed

Jumping without looking, or the opposite: freezing up because you're scared of getting it wrong.

Reversed, The Fool swings to one of two extremes. One is recklessness: heat-of-the-moment decisions, risks you didn't need to take, or running forward so you don't have to face a problem. The other is paralysis, wanting so badly not to make a mistake that you don't move at all. The work here is finding a middle ground between impulse and caution.

In love, reversed can point to someone who won't commit, or a relationship that lives on the rush and never settles. It can also be the fear of trusting again after something went wrong. At work it warns of projects that start with no foundation, quitting a job just because you're fed up, or a good idea that fizzles for lack of follow-through.

As a yes or no answer

Yes

Yes, but keep your eyes open. The Fool says to take the step even without all the answers. Some paths only show up once you're already walking.
